A mandelic peel is a gentle yet potent treatment, celebrated for its antibacterial properties, that effectively targets acne, fine lines, and wrinkles while enhancing uneven skin tones and firming the skin. This peel not only combats acne-causing bacteria but also regulates oil production and reduces inflammation and redness. As a result, it can significantly decrease the frequency of breakouts in as little as 1 to 2 weeks, and stubborn dark spots may begin to fade within 4 to 8 weeks.
A salicylic peel is a very effective treatment for various skin issues, including acne, melasma, freckles, and sunspots. This peel deeply cleanses pores and removes dead skin cells that can clog follicles and cause blemishes. Salicylic acid also significantly reduces inflammation, redness, and swelling linked to acne. Furthermore, it targets hyperpigmentation, such as sunspots and melasma, by breaking down the top layer of the skin, which rejuvenates and improves its overall appearance. Salicylic peels are ideally performed at monthly intervals, with a recommended series of 4 to 6 treatments to achieve optimal results. The benefits of these peels can last up to 6 months!
Before applying the mandelic or salicylic peel, the skin is thoroughly cleansed and then treated with a toner to remove natural oils. The peel is then applied using gentle brush strokes and left on the skin for 5 to 10 minutes (mandelic peel) and 6 minutes (salicylic peel). Patients may experience a tingling sensation (mandelic peel) or a slight stinging sensation similar to mild sunburn (salicylic peel) during this time. Both chemical peels are generally well-tolerated.
After the procedure, patients may experience temporary redness and mild flaking as the skin exfoliates. This typically lasts 1 to 3 days, therefore it is advisable to allow the skin 2 to 3 days to repair post-treatment.
The ideal candidate for a mandelic peel typically has problematic skin, characterised by issues such as pigmentation, acne, and breakouts. This peel is also well-suited for all skin types, particularly patients with sensitive/finer skin types seeking a more potent treatment. On the other hand, the ideal candidate for a salicylic acid peel is looking to enhance their skin by reducing mild fine lines and wrinkles, alleviating skin inflammation, correcting irregular skin pigmentation, or treating acne.
While salicylic acid peels are safe for darker skin tones, it is important to note that there is an increased risk of hypopigmentation. Neither of these chemical peels are suitable for individuals who have taken types of oral acne medication in the past 6 months, those with a personal or family history of keloids (ridged areas caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue), or those who are pregnant.
